Project context
Qualia is a VR battle-arena project in which two teams contest each other’s base. Head and hand tracking make the player’s body central to interaction. The founder contributed Unity programming and architecture within Qualia Games.
The development challenge
Raw tracking data had to become coherent physical interactions, including during rapid or imprecise movement. Experimental mechanics also needed fast iteration without turning the codebase into a succession of disposable prototypes.
Contribution and scope
Scalable VR Systems: Designed and implemented
modular systemsthat support both rapid prototyping and long-term scalability for new features.Experimental VR Mechanics: Prototyped and refined mechanics using
head & hand trackingfor natural, button-free interactions that enhance immersion.Team Guidance: Provided architectural advice and
best practicesto ensure maintainable and efficient code across the project.Cross-Disciplinary Collaboration: Coordinated with designers, artists, and developers to align gameplay, UX, and technical requirements.
Delivered functionality
- Modular systems supporting interaction prototypes and subsequent feature development.
- Head- and hand-tracked mechanics, with refined collisions, forces, and movement smoothing over the existing input systems.
- Architecture guidance, multidisciplinary coordination, and onboarding support for the project team.
Engineering in detail
Challenge: Physics-Driven VR Interactions
Translating raw head and hand tracking data into interactions that felt responsive, believable, and physically grounded proved complex, especially under fast or imprecise user movement.
✔ Solution: Implemented advanced physics-based logic on top of the existing input systems, refining collision handling, force application, and movement smoothing to ensure interactions felt natural, consistent, and immersive in real-world VR scenarios.
Challenge: Balancing Prototyping & Scalability
Frequent iteration threatened system stability and long-term maintainability.
✔ Solution: Structured systems with a modular architecture, allowing quick feature testing while supporting growth for future updates.
